Inherited from Sanskrit धूम (dhūmá), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰuHmás, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰuh₂mós (smoke). Cognate with Ancient Greek θυμός (thumós), Latin fūmus, Old Church Slavonic дꙑмъ (dymŭ). Compare Urdu دُھواں (dhuvā̃) / Hindi धुआँ (dhuā̃).
