From Middle Persian twhyg (tuhīg, empty; vain, illusory; barren), from Proto-Iranian *tuŝyás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *tuŝćyás, from Proto-Indo-European *tus-sḱ-yós, from *tews- (to be empty). Cognate with Vedic Sanskrit तुच्छ्य (tucchyá).
