Borrowed from Classical Persian تعلیم (ta'līm), itself from Arabic تَعْلِيم (taʕlīm), from the Arabic root ع ل م (ʕ l m, “knowing; knowledge”). See also عِلْم (ʻilm, “knowledge”) and other Urdu terms derived from the Arabic root ع ل م. Compare Marathi तालीम (tālīm, “practice; rehearsal; gymnasium”).
