Borrowed from Ottoman Turkish باصمه (basma, “printed, something pressed”). Analyzed as an instance noun (on the pattern of such words as رَسْمَة (rasma, “a drawing; an artwork”) and بَسْمَة (basma, “a smile”)), forming the denominal root ب ص م (b-ṣ-m).
