From Arabic أَوْج (ʔawj), from Persian اوگ (owg), from Middle Iranian, ultimately Proto-Indo-European *h₂ewg- (“related to increasement”). Cognate with Gilaki اوچوک (učuk, “soar”) and Sanskrit उच्च (ucca).
