Etymology
From the root ي م ن (y-m-n); related to يَمِين (yamīn, “right (side)”); originally, denoted the south, as it was the cardinal direction to one's right when facing the sun. It's one of the Arabic country names which requires the definite article اَل (al-).

- Unlike the majority of country names اَلْيَمَن (al-yaman) is a masculine.
