From Ancient Greek Ἀλεξάνδρεια (Alexándreia), full name Ἀλεξάνδρεια ἡ κατ’ Αἴγυπτον (Alexándreia hē kat’ Aígupton, “Alexandria in Egypt”), with initial Ἀλ- (Al-) reanalyzed as the Arabic definite article, metathesis of ξ /ks/ to /sk/ and the ending -εια (-eia) (pronounced /ia/ in Koine Greek) assimilated to the common Arabic feminine adjectival ending ـِيَّة (-iyya).
