Etymology

From اسكی (eski, old) + شهر (şehir, city), a name which is documented since the late 15th century. During the Seljuk period, the city was known as سلطان اوڭی (sultan öñü), while during the Greek period this place was known as Δορῠ́λαιον (Dorúlaion), whose ruins can be found near the city.
