Modern borrowing from Hindustani इसबग़ोल / اسبغول (isbaġol), itself from Persian اسبغول (esbağôl), from the variant اسپیوش (espayôš), اسفیوش (esfayôš), اسبیوش (esbayôš) of which an Arabic أَسْفِيُوس (ʔasfiyūs) has been borrowed already in the Middle Ages.
