Inherited from Prakrit 𑀅𑀓𑁆𑀔𑀯𑀸𑀟𑀕 (akkhavāḍaga), from Sanskrit अक्षवाट (akṣavāṭa, “wrestling-ground”). Cognate with Bengali আখড়া (akhoṛa), Gujarati અખાડો (akhāḍo), Hindustani اکھاڑا / अखाड़ा (akhāṛā), and Kachchi અખાડ઼ો (akhāṛo).
