Inherited from Middle Persian [script needed] (ʾʾwrd /⁠awurdan⁠/), from Proto-Iranian *ā- + *bárati- (to bear), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂éd (to, at) and Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰárati (to bear, carry) respectively.[1]
