Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *āŕ- (to go astray); cognate with Old Turkic 𐰀𐰕 (az /⁠āz-⁠/), Azerbaijani azmaq, Bashkir аҙыу (aźıw), Chuvash урма (urma), Karakhanid اازْماقْ (āzmāq), Southern Altai азар (azar) and Turkmen azmak.

  2. (intransitive) to go astray, stray, err, to deviate from the path of duty or rectitude
  3. (intransitive) to go mad, to become furious and unmanageable, dangerous, or ferocious
