שבץ

In sense “anguish, death pangs”, occurs once in the Bible. In sense “stroke”, is shortened from שבץ מוחי (shaváts mokhí, “a brain shaváts”).

שָׁבָץ • (shaváts) m (singular construct שְׁבַץ־)

1. (biblical) Anguish, death pangs.
   • II Samuel 1:9:

     וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלַי עֲמָד־נָא עָלַי וּמֹתְתֵנִי כִּי אֲחָזַנִי הַשָּׁבָץ כִּי־כָל־עוֹד נַפְשִׁי בִּי׃

     vayómer elái amód-na alái umotkhéni ki akhazáni hashaváts kí-kól-ód nafshí bí.

     He [Saul] said unto me again, Stand, I pray thee, upon me, and slay me: for anguish is come upon me, because my life [is] yet whole in me.[1]

2. A stroke: a sudden loss of function after blood flow to the brain is interrupted.
