Etymology 1
Highly irregular noun: the plural inserts a /w/ in the stem, and gets the masculine suffix (although it retains feminine agreement). Sometimes the form קַרתָּא is also used as the absolute form. Cognate with Arabic قَرْيَة (qarya, “city, town”) and with Hebrew קִרְיָה (“city, town”). Compare with Phoenician 𐤒𐤓𐤕 (qrt, “city”).
