From Proto-Semitic *ʿall-, *ʿaly- (“high; height, elevation”), from Proto-Afroasiatic *ʿal-, *ʿVl(ay)- (“to be high, tall; to rise; mountain”).
Related to Arabic عَلِيّ (ʕaliyy, “to be high, exalted”) and Arabic عَلَىٰ (ʕalā, “to climb”).
