  1. (Biblical Hebrew) pledge, deposit, pawn (a thing given as security for a debt)
    • Tanach, Deuteronomy 24:10, with translation of the English Standard Version:
      כִּי־תַשֶּׁה בְרֵעֲךָ מַשַּׁאת מְאוּמָה לֹא־תָבֹא אֶל־בֵּיתוֹ לַעֲבֹט עֲבֹטוֹ׃
      When you make your neighbor a loan of any sort, you shall not go into his house to collect his pledge.

  • In the Hebrew Bible the word only occurs four times, in Deuteronomy 24.
