From מסילת / מְסִלַּת (mesilát, “path of, track of”), the singular construct form of מסילה / מְסִלַּה (mesilá, “path, track”), and בַּרְזֶל (barzél, “iron”); hence, "iron path, iron track". Calque of German Eisenbahn, possibly also French chemin de fer, Russian железная дорога (železnaja doroga) etc.
