Etymology
From Middle High German gæhe, from Old High German gāhi, from Proto-Germanic *ganhuz. Compare German jäh (“abrupt”), Jähe (“abruptness”). Also cognate with Bavarian gach (“sudden, abrupt”), Dutch gauw (“soon”) and probably English gay, jay.
