Possibly a partial calque of German Buchweizen, as ⁧בוך⁩ (bukh) or ⁧בוכע⁩ (bukhe) in the sense of "beech" (cf. German Buche) is not attested in Yiddish. By surface analysis, ⁧בוק⁩ (buk, “beech”) +‎ ⁧ווייץ⁩ (veyts).
