Etymology
From Iranian *tabil. Compare Manichaean Parthian 𐫎𐫁𐫏𐫓 (ṯbyl /tabil/, “tambourine, drum (?)”), Ancient Greek ταβάλα (tabála), ταβῆλα (tabêla, “Parthian word for a drum”). Classical Syriac ܛܒܠܐ (ṭaḇlāʾ), Arabic طَبْل (ṭabl) and Turkish davul are from the same source.
