Of unknown origin. Rare in Armenian. Related to Georgian ტალახი (ṭalaxi, “clay, mud; adobe”), and possibly dialectal Armenian տալախ (talax), տալաղ (talaġ, “coagulated, clotted”). Ačaṙyan derives տաղախ (tałax) from Georgian-Zan, because the word is more widespread there and may have a native origin: compare Georgian ტალა (ṭala, “pus from bad tooth”). The similarity with Arabic طَلْخ (ṭalḵ, “muddy water”), which represents a rare metathesis of the known root ل ط خ (l-ṭ-ḵ), is accidental.
