Old Armenian

Etymology

Of unknown origin. Rare in Armenian. Related to Georgian ტალახი (ṭalaxi, clay, mud; adobe), and possibly dialectal Armenian տալախ (talax), տալաղ (talaġ, coagulated, clotted). Ačaṙyan derives տաղախ (tałax) from Georgian-Zan, because the word is more widespread there and may have a native origin: compare Georgian ტალა (ṭala, pus from bad tooth). The similarity with Arabic طَلْخ (ṭalḵ, muddy water), which represents a rare metathesis of the known root ل ط خ (l-ṭ-ḵ), is accidental.
