Etymology

A borrowing from a Southwestern Iranian word of the form *vard(a)-pet (literally master of students or master of work). The first part is ultimately from Proto-Iranian *warj- (note especially Old Persian *vard- (to work)) and is a doublet of վարժ (varž), վարձ (varj), and գործ (gorc). The second part is from *pátiš, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *pátiš (master, lord), whence Old Armenian պետ (pet). Akin to Middle Persian 𐭥𐭥𐭣𐭯𐭲 (wrdpt /wardbed/, a title).
