From the Iranian compound *panta-duxta- (literally put out, set forth on the road, on the way (for the purpose of driving out of the community)),[1] whose constituents go back to Proto-Indo-Iranian *pántaHs (path) and a participle formation from an unattested descendant of Proto-Indo-European *dewk- (to pull, to draw; to lead).
