From Iranian *nimān, composed of the prefix ni- and the root mān-. For the constituents compare Sanskrit नि (ni, down) and मान (māna, form, appearance; likeness, resemblance), Persian مانا (mânâ, alike, equal, resembling), Kurdish mîna, mînan (like, similar to).
