Old Armenian

Etymology

The origin is uncertain. Perhaps created by the Hellenizing School from ներ (ner, in) and փողոց (pʻołocʻ, street), as a calque of Ancient Greek ἐγκώμιον (enkṓmion, laudatory ode, praise), from ἐν (en, in) and κῶμος (kômos, festival, procession in the streets). For the unusual spelling instead of *ներփող (*nerpʻoł) see բդեդ (bded).
