The original spelling is մաւրու (mawru), from Proto-Indo-European *meh₂trui(e)h₂-, from *méh₂tēr. Cognate with Ancient Greek μητρυιά (mētruiá, stepmother), Proto-Germanic *mōdrijǭ. See also հօրու (hōru).
