Borrowing from Iranian. Compare Middle Persian 𐭡𐭩𐭥𐭧 (BYRḤ /⁠māh⁠/, moon), 𐫖𐫀𐫍𐫏𐫃𐫀𐫗 pl (mʾhygʾn /⁠māhīgān⁠/, month). Ultimately from Proto-Iranian *mā́Hah.
