Etymology

From Ancient Greek ἔθνος (éthnos), but the initial հ- (h-) is problematic. Ačaṙyan following de Lagarde explains it by Classical Syriac mediation. On the other hand, Beekes explains the initial h- in Armenian, Coptic and Gothic by derivation from the spoken by-form ἕθνος (héthnos).
