Uncertain. Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *winǵ- + -ենի (-eni) and cognate with Lithuanian vìnkšna (European white elm), Russian вяз (vjaz), English wych elm, Albanian vidh, Northern Kurdish bizî (elm), perhaps also Ossetian уисхъӕд (wisqæd, maple).
