Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *lergʷ- (smooth). Related to ողորկ (ołork) and cognate with Old Irish lerg.

Alternatively, from Proto-Indo-European *negʷ-no-, from *negʷ-. through dissimilation n...nl...n with -r- as in մերկ (merk).
