An Iranian borrowing: compare Parthian 𐫋𐫏𐫡 (jyr /⁠žīr⁠/, intelligent, wise), Northern Kurdish jîr, Central Kurdish ژیر (jîr, intelligent, wise, clever), Persian زیرک (zirak, intelligent, quick in understanding). Ultimately from Proto-Iranian *ǰiHrá- (lively, vivacious).
