Old Armenian

Etymology

Composed of *զառ (*zaṙ, old) + ամ (am, year, age); *զառ (*zaṙ) is borrowed from an Iranian word for "old, senile, decrepit"; compare Middle Persian zlmʾn' (zarmān, old man; old age, decrepitude), Ossetian зӕронд (zærond, old). Less likely it is composed of զ- (z-) + առ (aṙ). Compare also զառանցեմ (zaṙancʻem).
