Etymology
From the aorist stem եղ- (eł-) of լինիմ (linim) + -ան- (-an-). The origin of եղ- (eł-) is uncertain. It may be inherited from Proto-Indo-European *kʷel- (“to turn”) and cognate with Ancient Greek πέλω (pélō, “to be in motion, to go; to be; to become”), but the loss of *kʷ- is problematic. See also յեղում (yełum, “to change, to transmute”).
