An Iranian borrowing. Compare Middle Persian dʾyk' (dāyag, “nurse”), Persian دایه (dâye, “nurse”), Northern Kurdish dayik (“mother”). All ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *dʰeh₁(y)-.
