Etymology

From Northwestern Iranian *aδ-šaw-. For the constituents see Sanskrit अति (áti, over, beyond) and Persian شدن (šodan, to go).

  1. to run with an intention to attack; to raid, invade
    • 5th century, Bible, Revelation 9.9:
      Եւ ունէին զրահս իբրեւ զզրահս երկաթի․ եւ ձայն թեւոց նոցա իբրեւ զձայն կառավար ձիոց բազմաց որ արշաւեն ի պատերազմ։
      Ew unēin zrahs ibrew zzrahs erkatʻi; ew jayn tʻewocʻ nocʻa ibrew zjayn kaṙavar jiocʻ bazmacʻ or aršawen i paterazm.
      And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings [was] as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle.
