The origin is unknown. Compare dialectal Georgian ალავერდი (alaverdi, alfalfa), Proto-Germanic *arwīts (pea), Ancient Greek ἐρέβινθος (erébinthos, chickpea), ὄροβος (órobos, bitter vetch), Latin ervum (vetch).
