Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *-níd- (“nit”). Cognates include Ancient Greek κονίς (konís), Albanian thëni, Russian гни́да (gnída) and Old English hnitu (English nit).[1][2][3] The precise reconstruction of the Proto-Indo-European form remains problematic.
