Through haplology from Proto-Armenian *ananiríya-, from Proto-Indo-European *n̥-h₂nēr-yeh₂-, composed of the privative prefix *n̥-, whence ան- (an-), and *h₂nḗr (man, husband), whence այր (ayr).
