Etymology

The origin is uncertain. Usually considered an unidentified Arabic borrowing. According to Vardanjan, a distortion of the synonymous Arabic أَمْسُوخ (ʔamsūḵ).

  1. field horsetail, Equisetum arvense
    • 1478 – 1492, Amirdovlatʿ Amasiacʿi, Angitacʿ anpēt [Useless for Ignoramuses] 146:[1][2]
      Ամվաճ· ինքն զանապ ըլ խայլին ցեղերուն է․ եւ յիշած է ի վերայի զային իր համարն։
      Amvač· inkʻn zanap əl xaylin cʻeġerun ē; ew yišac ē i verayi zayin ir hamarn.
      Field horsetail = It is of the ذَنَب الْخَيْل (ḏanab al-ḵayl) family. It is mentioned under the letter զ (z) under its number.
