From Proto-Iranian *an-auša- (immortal). Cognate with Persian نوش (nôš, elixir of immortality), Avestan 𐬀𐬥𐬀𐬊𐬱𐬀 (anaoša, immortal), Old Armenian borrowings անոյշ (anoyš, sweet), անուշակ (anušak).
