Etymology

From *salqïn (cool), probably borrowed from Middle Mongol,[1] from Proto-Mongolic *salkïn (wind),[2] compare Mongolian салхи (salxi, wind).

Cognate with Kazakh салқын (salqyn, cool), Kyrgyz салкын (salkın, cool), Uzbek salqin (cool), Turkish salkın (cool).
