From *qonaq (guest), from Proto-Turkic *kon- (to visit, stay overnight, spend a night as a guest).

Cognate with Kazakh қонақ (qonaq, guest), Kyrgyz конок (konok, guest; food given to guests as a treat), Karachay-Balkar къонакъ (qonaq, guest), Kumyk къонакъ (qonaq, guest), Uzbek qoʻnoq (guest).
