From Proto-Slavic *ely, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁el-(h₁)en- (red deer, elk). Cognate with Ancient Greek ἑλλός (hellós, deer-calf), ἔλαφος (élaphos, deer), Lithuanian elnias, Old Armenian եղն (ełn).
