Inherited from Old East Slavic *ежикъ (*ežikŭ), ожикъ (ožikŭ), from Proto-Slavic *ežikъ.[1] Cognate with Russian ёжик (jóžik), Polish jeżyk. By surface analysis, єжъ (jež) +‎ -икъ (-ik).
