From Proto-Mordvinic *jalgə, inherited from Proto-Finno-Ugric *jalka (foot, leg), whence Finnish jalka, Livonian jālga, Kildin Sami ю̄лльк (jūll’k), Western Mari ял (jal), Hungarian gyalog (on foot).
