Inherited from Old East Slavic ѩбедьникъ (jębedĭnikŭ), ѧбетьникъ (ębetĭnikŭ), borrowed from Old Norse embætti, from Proto-Germanic *ambahtiją, derived from *ambahtaz (“servant”), from Gaulish ambaxtos (“servant”), from Proto-Celtic *ambaxtos (“servant”).
Compare Gothic 𐌰𐌽𐌳𐌱𐌰𐌷𐍄𐌹 (andbahti, “service, office”) and Old High German ambahti (“position, office”).
