From Proto-Mordvinic *äśkələms, inherited from Proto-Uralic *aśkele (“step”), itself derived from *aśka- (“to step”). Cognates include Finnish askel (“step”), astua (“to step, to enter”), Western Mari ашкыл (aškyl, “step”), Komi-Zyrian воськов (vośkov, “step”).
