шершавый

Russian

Etymology

From шерша́в (šeršáv, rough) + -вый (-vyj), which per Vasmer comes either from Old East Slavic шьрсть (šĭrstĭ) -and is thus cognate to шерсть (šerstʹ, wool)- or from a root related to шо́рох (šórox, rustle, murmur). Compare Ukrainian шереха́тий (šerexátyj), Belarusian ше́рхаць (šjérxacʹ), Slovene sŕšati.
