Etymology
From Proto-Mordvinic *šapamə, inherited from Proto-Finno-Ugric *šappa (“sour, acid”). Cognates include Moksha шапама (šapama), Finnish hapan (happama-), Estonian hapu and possibly Hungarian savanyú.
