Possibly from Proto-Finno-Ugric *ćappɜ- (“to hit with a clapping sound, strike”). Potential cognates include Northern Sami čuohppat, Kildin Sami чӯһпэ (čūhpe), Udmurt чапкон (ćapkon, “palm strike”), Hungarian csap (“to strike”). Ultimately onomatopoeic.
